Cisco Jabber for Remote Users

What is Cisco Jabber?

Cisco Jabber is a software client that allows you to use your university phone line to send and receive calls, check voicemail, and access other phone-related features from your desktop or mobile device.


What Do You Need to Get Started?

  • University-owned laptop or desktop
  • Headphones with built-in microphone
  • Jabber installed software
  • University-assigned extension

Cisco Jabber is supported on Windows and Mac computers. See below for instructions on installing and operating Jabber on your university-owned device.

How to Install and Use Jabber on a University Device

Install Jabber

  1. Open Software Center. For Windows users, the icon is on your desktop. For Mac users, it is located on your dock. Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
    Important: If off campus, connect to the VPN before opening Software Center.
  2. Click on Jabber and then click Install.
  3. Once installed, open the program.

Login

  1. Type in your UHCL username and password.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  2. Click Sign In.
  3. On first login, Jabber will give you a short tour of the call features. You can skip or follow along.

Placing, Receiving, and Transferring Phone Calls

The audio quality of a softphone connection depends on your microphone and speakers. Use a headset in public areas.

Placing a Call

You can place a call in two ways:

Searching the UHCL Directory

  1. Type the person’s complete name in the Jabber search or call field.
  2. Hover over the name and click Uploaded Image to place the call.

Typing the Phone Number

  1. Type the phone number in the Jabber search or call field.
    Important: For non-UHCL numbers, enter 9 first, then the number (e.g., 97131234567). For UHCL numbers, dial the 4-digit extension.
  2. Click Uploaded Imageto place the call.

Placing a Call on Hold

  1. Click the three dots in the active call window.
  2. Select Hold. Click Resume to resume the call.

Transfer a Call

  1. Click the three dots in the active call window.
  2. Select Transfer. This places the active call on hold.
  3. Type the name or number to transfer the call.
  4. Select the person or number when it appears.
  5. Press Transfer to complete.
  6. Click the red button to hang up.

Receiving Calls

Ensure the following:

  • Application is running
  • Logged into Jabber
  • Status shows AvailableUploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  • Your phone is not set to forward to voicemail or another extension

When you receive an incoming call, a call window opens on your screen:

  • Click Answer to accept
  • Click Decline to forward to voicemail
