What is the Reassign Feature in Canvas?

Summary

Empower students to improve by using SpeedGrader’s Reassign feature when a student’s submission fails to meet expectations.

Environment

Canvas

Content

The Reassign feature in SpeedGrader enables instructors to return a student’s submission for revision when it does not meet assignment requirements. This promotes iterative learning and helps students achieve mastery before final grading.

When to Use

  • The submission is incomplete or missing required elements.
  • The student needs to address feedback before earning full credit.
  • You are implementing a mastery-based or competency-based grading approach.

Benefits

  • Encourages student engagement and improvement.
  • Supports personalized feedback loops.
  • Maintains grading integrity and fairness.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1 - Open SpeedGrader

Navigate to the assignment and select SpeedGrader.

Step 2 - Review Submission

Assess the student’s work and provide feedback in the comment box.

Step 3 - Click Reassign

Locate the Reassign button near the grading panel.

Click to return the submission for revision.

Step 4 - Notify Student

Canvas will automatically notify the student that the submission requires changes.

Important Notes

  • Students can only resubmit if the assignment settings allow multiple submissions.
  • Reassign does not override due dates or late policies.
  • Use clear, actionable feedback to guide resubmission.

Best Practices

  • Combine Reassign with detailed comments for clarity.
  • Set expectations upfront in your syllabus about revision opportunities.
  • Monitor resubmissions to ensure timely grading.
