Merging Canvas Shells

Summary

NOTE: The following information is also available in the IDT team’s video, Crash Course - Canvas Course Merging [6:45].

Unlike UHCL’s previous learning management system (LMS), Blackboard, faculty now merge their own Canvas shells without needing to request IDT assistance and waiting for IDT staff to complete the merges.

  • To avoid content duplication and navigation issues, you should always merge the Canvas shells for your classes BEFORE adding any content to the shells to be merged.
  • There are two bits of vocabulary to understand before merging your Canvas shells – “parent” course and “child” course(s). The parent course is the Canvas shell to which your child course(s) will be merged. Instructors decide which merged course will act as the parent shell and which will be the child shell(s). For example, if I want to merge two sections of LEGL 4325 and two sections of MGMT 4325, I might elect to make the first MGMT 4325 section the parent course to which the three child shells (MGMT 4325.02, LEGL 4325.01, LEGL 4325.02) will be merged.

How-To

Task: Merge two or more Canvas shells into a single shared shell.

Instructions

Step 1

From your Canvas Dashboard, open all Canvas shells to be merged in separate browser tabs. NOTE: You can right click on the tile for each shell and select the “Open Link in a New Tab” option.
